THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM
Press Report Reveals White House
Interview with Vincent Warren,
In December 2004, after the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, the Bush administration's Justice Department declared that the use of torture was abhorrent and wrote a legal opinion to back it up. But a New York Times story published on Oct. 4 revealed that under former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, who took office in February 2005, the Justice Department issued another secret legal opinion authorizing painful physical and psychological interrogation techniques, including head slapping, simulated drowning or water boarding and exposure to frigid temperatures. The Times report also asserted that the U.S. government is still holding people in CIA secret prisons abroad after publicly announcing the end of the program in September 2006. The Bush administration's stance on torture contravenes laws passed by Congress, Supreme Court decisions, and the United Nations Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. During this congressional term, the Center for Constitutional Rights, which represents many of the detainees at Guantánamo Bay U.S. Naval base in Cuba, will be challenging the Bush administration's expansion of executive power to detain suspects without due process before the U.S. Supreme Court. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Vincent Warren, executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights, who examines President Bush's secret authorization to subject detainees held by the U.S. to interrogations employing torture and abuse. Contact the Center for Constitutional Rights by calling (212) 614-6464 or visit the group's website at www.ccr-ny.org Related links:
U.S. Religious Leaders Hold Dialogue
Interview with Paul Knitter,
Two days after the highly controversial visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Columbia University in late September, more than 100 religious leaders from various Christian denominations in the U.S. met with Ahmadinejad in New York for a religious dialogue. The meeting was organized at the request of religious leaders in Iran by Pax Christi, a Catholic peace group, and the Mennonite Church, a traditional peace church. Paul Knitter, a professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York whose expertise is inter-religious dialogue, was one of those who attended the gathering. He said he had many reservations about the meeting, stemming from his objections to Ahmadinejad's statements denying the Holocaust and calling for an end to Israel. He also did not want the meeting to be used by Ahmadinejad to claim credibility through such encounters. Knitter said he decided to participate because the organizers explained it was part of an effort to keep the channels of communication open and lay the groundwork for more serious dialogue in a situation where the threat of violence is escalating -- and there is little positive contact between the governments of Iran and the U.S. Between The Lines Melinda Tuhus spoke with Knitter who describes the religious meeting with Ahmadinejad and the hope of many that a conflict between the U.S. and Iran can be averted. Paul Knitter is the Paul Tillich professor of Theology, World Religions and Culture at Union Theological Seminary. For more information on the inter-religious dialogue, call the Mennonite Central Committee at 1-888-563-4676, or visit their website at www.mcc.org
Bush Vetoes Children's Health Care Funding,
Interview with Dr. Stephanie Woolhandler,
Congressional passage of legislation authorizing a $35 billion increase over five years for the State Children's Health Insurance Program or SCHIP, was designed to assist children whose parents are unable to purchase private health insurance, but who made too much money to be eligible for Medicaid. There are an estimated 8 million children from low-income families in the U.S. that are currently not covered by public or private health insurance programs. The funds were to come from a 61-cent tax hike on each pack of cigarettes. President Bush used his veto power for only the fourth time on Oct. 3rd to veto the SCHIP legislation. He maintained that expanding SCHIP would be a step toward socialized medicine, shift the focus from the poor and cost too much. Instead, he proposed a $5 billion increase to SCHIP that critics say wouldn't cover rising costs to children currently enrolled. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Dr. Stephanie Woolhandler, associate professor of medicine at Harvard University and co-founder of Physicians for a National Health Program. Dr. Woolhandler explains why she believes President Bush vetoed the SCHIP legislation and how this debate relates to the larger failures of the U.S. health care system.
