 U.S. Intensified Bombing Campaigns
in Iraq and Afghanistan
Breed Fear and Hatred

Interview with Foreign Policy in Focus columnist Conn Hallinan,
conducted by Scott Harris

cluster

In one of the largest airstrikes since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, American warplanes dropped 40,000 pounds of bombs on Sunni farmlands south of Baghdad Jan. 10. The targets were suspected al Qaeda positions near citrus groves around the town of Arab Jabour. In November, leaders of a Sunni Arab militia group allied with the U.S. reported American bombs killed 45 members of their group, when they were mistaken for al Qaeda fighters. In October, 15 women and children were killed when U.S. planes attacked a suspected enemy position in the Lake Thar Thar region northwest of Baghdad.

The Associated Press reported that there has been a five-fold increase in the number of bombs dropped on Iraq during the first six months of 2007, coinciding with President Bush's troop escalation. More than 30 tons of the ordinance dropped have been cluster weapons, which take an especially heavy toll on civilians.

Afghanistan has also endured an intensification of U.S. and NATO airstrikes which has resulted in a sharp increase in the number of civilians killed. In mid-2007 Afghan President Hamid Karzai held a press conference to condemn what he called the "careless operations of NATO and international forces" that he asserted was killing innocent victims. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Foreign Policy in Focus columnist Conn Hallinan, who examines the U.S. military's bombing tactics and how the resulting civilian casualties exacerbate hostility toward occupation forces.

Hallinan is former director of the journalism program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Read his articles online at www.fpif.org

Reproductive Rights Issue Missing
in Presidential Campaign

Interview with Gloria Feldt,
former president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America,
conducted by Melinda Tuhus

abortion

There have been many signs in the past year about the shifting political terrain on reproductive rights in the U.S. Last April, in its Gonzales v. Carhart decision, the Supreme Court upheld the first-ever federal abortion ban, restricting but not overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion that marked its 35th anniversary on Jan. 22.. Just this month, data was released showing a marked decline in abortions, likely due both to women's easier access to more effective birth control, and a drop in the number of abortion providers and new roadblocks for women who seek abortions. Media culture has also weighed in on the issue, with two popular movies, "Knocked Up" and "Juno," and the real-life drama of 16-year-old actress Jamie Lynn Spears' pregnancy.

Yet, the presidential candidates have been virtually silent on the issue of reproductive rights, even with a strong pro-choice woman in the race.

Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Gloria Feldt, long time reproductive rights activists and former president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America from 1996 to 2005. Feldt, currently a writer and lecturer, discusses why she believes abortion is not yet an issue in the presidential race, but should be. And she explains how pro-choice advocates can find new approaches to support the threatened Roe v. Wade decision.

Gloria Feldt recently endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. Read Feldt's articles online at www.gloriafeldt.com or visit the Planned Parenthood Federation of America's website at www.plannedparenthood.org.
Issues of Race Injected
Into Primary Election Battles

Interview with the Rev. Graylan Hagler,
Plymouth Congregational United Church senior pastor,
conducted by Scott Harris

shame

As the presidential candidates gear up for the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday primary elections, where voters in 24 states will cast ballots for 2,700 Democratic and Republican convention delegates, issues of race have found their way into the debate. Not long after Hillary Clinton's controversial comments praising President Johnson for the role he played in helping Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. achieve the goals of the American civil rights movement, several right-wing talk show hosts have attacked Sen. Barak Obama's pastor, Dr. Jeremiah Wright, charging that he promotes black racial separatism.

Just days before Republican voters went to the polls in South Carolina's Jan. 19 primary election, GOP presidential candidate former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee appealed to voters on the issue of race, asking his fellow candidates to stop calling for the removal of the Confederate flag from government offices. In what seemed like a coordinated effort, an Atlanta-based group, Americans for the Preservation of American Culture, ran radio ads which attacked John McCain for his opposition to flying the Confederate flag on public buildings. Columnist Max Blumenthal wrote that making coded appeals to white racism is nothing new for Huckabee, "Indeed, well before he was a nationally known political star, Huckabee nurtured a relationship with America's largest white supremacist group, the Council of Conservative Citizens.

As America celebrated the life and work of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 21, the 2008 presidential election is increasingly becoming both a magnet for racial tension and providing opportunities to transcend a volatile issue which has long divided the people of the United States. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Rev. Graylan Hagler, senior pastor of the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Wash., D.C. Hagler, a longtime activist, looks at the issues of race and social justice, which have emerged in the 2008 presidential campaign.
