THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Group Demands Answers
In another chapter in the ongoing challenges to the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping operation, the Center for Constitutional Rights has filed new allegations to support their 2007 Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the National Security Agency and the Department of Justice. The suit demands that the Bush administration turn over all records of surveillance on attorneys representing suspects detained at Guantanamo Bay U.S. Naval base in Cuba.
on Bush Surveillance of Guantanamo Attorneys Interview with Emi MacClean, staff attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights, conducted by Scott Harris The lawsuit, Wilner v. NSA, was filed on behalf of 16 attorneys, including law professors and partners at prominent international law firms who represent detainees at Guantanamo and believe they may have been the subject of the NSA's warrantless wiretapping program that began after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Justice Department lawyers said they could neither confirm nor deny that detainees' lawyers had been targets of such surveillance. In this latest court filing, some of the attorneys who believe they are targets state they no longer use office telephones or email and travel thousands of miles to meet witnesses in person rather than risk government wiretaps. One lawyer representing Guantanamo prisoners said government officials, insisting on anonymity, had warned him twice that he "should be careful in his electronic communications." Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Emi MacClean, a staff attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights, who discusses her groups' demand for documents related to government surveillance of lawyers representing Guantanamo detainees. Congress Calls on Pentagon
Since an April 20 New York Times article revealed how the Pentagon recruited and successfully embedded a group of 75 retired U.S. military officers as pro-Iraq war TV network commentators, the media companies that hired them have largely remained silent on the issue. Networks, including Fox News, NBC, CNN, CBS, ABC and NPR used the Pentagon's approved cheeleaders, many of whom had financial ties to military contractors profiting from the war, with little or no questions about possible conflicts of interest.
and FCC to Investigate Pro-war Propaganda Operation Interview with Timothy Karr, campaign director with Free Press, conducted by Scott Harris Thus far, 41 members of the House of Representatives have called on the Pentagon's inspector general to investigate the covert operation. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., described the propaganda program as an "unethical, and potentially illegal, propaganda campaign aimed at deliberately misleading the American public." In a letter to the Federal Communications Commission on May 6, Reps. DeLauro and John Dingell, D-Mich., asked the agency to probe whether the Pentagon's special briefings and trips to Iraq offered to the retired officers was sufficient to require sponsorship identification when the analysts appeared on TV. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wisc., demanded the Government Accountability Office look into whether the program violated prohibitions on publicity or propaganda activities. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Timothy Karr, campaign director with Free Press. He explains why his group and others around the nation are demanding accountability from the Pentagon, Bush administration officials and media corporations for an apparently illegal operation that subjected the American public to blatant government propaganda. Latinos for Universal Health Care Gather for first Regional Conference
On May 3, Latino leaders from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Massachusetts came together in Meriden, Connecticut, for the first-ever regional Latino summit on universal health care. In a full day of workshops and plenaries, the 60 participants heard about state-level initiatives moving toward universal coverage, in light of inaction on the issue at the federal level.
Interview with Jaime Torres, co-founder of Latinos for National Health Insurance, conducted by Melinda Tuhus Those attending the conference were in accord with the Institute of Medicine guidelines that health care must be universal, continuous, portable between jobs, affordable to families and sustainable to the economy. But they added that universal coverage should also be culturally appropriate and provide "geographic equality," at least between urban and rural parts of the U.S. They also considered advocating health coverage in territories outside the U.S., such as Puerto Rico, where many Latinos who live in the U.S. spend significant portions of their lives. Many said they feel a sense of urgency, since Latinos now make up the largest minority group in the U.S. and comprise the highest proportion of those without health insurance. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with New York City-based podiatrist, Dr. Jaime Torres, co-founder in 2005 of Latinos for National Health Insurance. His group co-sponsored the regional summit, along with the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut. He discusses his group's support for universal health care and how the issue relates to the debate over immigration.
