This week we present Between The Lines' summary of
under-reported news stories and:
Ohio Activists Resist GOP Voter Supression Campaign
Months in advance of the Nov. 4 presidential election, the Republican party has aggressively attempted to purge hundreds of thousands of voters from voting rolls across the nation. The effort carried out in battleground states has specifically targeted likely Democratic voting groups such as African Americans, Latinos, seniors and students. Challenging the validity of voters' registration is among the tactics being employed by the GOP to counter the hundreds of thousands of new voters that have registered throughout the year.
RealAudio MP3 Interview with Bob Fitrakis, Ohio attorney and voting rights activist, conducted by Scott Harris Integrated into the Republican's strategy of justifying voter suppression is the repeated accusation that groups like ACORN and the NAACP have committed fraud by intentionally registering phony voters, a charge that many journalists investigating the issue have found to be baseless. "Ground Zero" among the critical must win, toss-up states in the presidential race is Ohio, where the GOP has failed in its effort to challenge 200,000 new, mostly Democratic voters whose voter registration information does not precisely match government data bases. On Oct. 17, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Ohio's Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner's decision to withhold lists of these voters from partisan county election boards. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Ohio attorney and voting rights activist Bob Fitrakis, who discusses the Republican Party campaign to suppress the votes of Barack Obama supporters in Ohio and steps taken by groups working to protect the integrity of the election process. Bob Fitrakis edits and publishes the Columbus Free Press with journalist Harvey Wasserman. Read their investigative articles online at www.freepress.org Related links:
California Law Mandates
At the end of September, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a unique bill into law. It's the first regulation in the nation that proposes to reduce greenhouse gases by reducing sprawl. And not a moment too soon, since total vehicle miles traveled has recently grown twice as fast as the state's population. It's not at all uncommon for people to have to drive an hour, even two hours each way, to work.
Regional Planning to Curb Global Warming RealAudio MP3 Interview with Amanda Eaken, National Resources Defense Council smart growth policy expert, conducted by Melinda Tuhus The bill, which was drafted and supported by the Natural Resources Defense Council, or NRDC, aims to correct the imbalance between the geographic concentration of jobs and housing on a regional basis. The objective is to bring jobs closer to where people live -- or build housing closer to where the jobs are, thus reducing sprawl and vehicle miles traveled in either case. The legislation's stated goal is to cut greenhouse gas emissions 30 percent by the year 2020. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Amanda Eaken, smart growth policy expert with the NRDC, about the rationale for the new law and how it's designed to work. A Large Obama Victory Can Help
A Gallup poll in early October found that President Bush's job approval rating is at 25 percent, the lowest of the Bush administration, and only three percentage points above the lowest presidential approval rating in the polling company's history. Only 55 percent of those surveyed identifying themselves as Republicans approved of Bush's job performance as president.
Build the Progressive Movement RealAudio MP3 Interview with Norman Solomon, columnist and author of "Made Love, Got War: Close Encounters with America's Warfare State," conducted by Scott Harris The financial meltdown has proved to be yet another calamity among many that voters blame on President Bush. The subprime mortgage disaster and the recent collapse of major U.S. banks and financial institutions has also been a wake-up call to countless Americans about the failure of the Republican party's free market philosophy. During their years in power, the Republicans gutted government regulations and promoted a laissez faire attitude toward the winners and losers under America's capitalist system. The Nov. 4 presidential election may well be seen in coming years as a referendum on the GOP's handling of the economy over recent decades, where wages have stagnated and the disparity between rich and poor has risen to record levels. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with author and columnist Norman Solomon, who considers the impact a large margin of victory for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will have on repudiating the Republican party's conservative agenda and building a stronger progressive movement. Norman Solomon is author of "Made Love, Got War: Close Encounters with America's Warfare State." Read his columns online at www.normansolomon.com Related links:
