This week we present Between The Lines' summary of
under-reported news stories and:
Worldwide Protests Condemn
Israel's attack on Gaza, which it says is necessary in order to stop the ruling Hamas party from firing rockets into southern Israel, has resulted in a humanitarian disaster. As of Jan. 13, UN and medical personnel on the ground in Gaza estimate that over 900 Palestinians have been killed, with as many as half being civilians, including hundreds of women and children. Four thousand Gazans are reported injured. Israel has suffered 13 deaths, including 10 soldiers.
Israel's Gaza Attack and Occupation ![]() ![]() Excerpt of speech by Adam Shapiro, co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement, at a Jan. 9 New Haven, Conn. protest rally, produced by Melinda Tuhus ![]() The protests against Israel's air bombardment, which began Dec. 27, and ground invasion, which was launched on Jan. 3, have been growing in size and number. Last weekend, protests were held in at least 114 American cities in 40 states, and in many other cities around the world. On Jan. 9, in New Haven, Conn., about 200 people gathered for an indoor rally to hear Palestinian-American, African American Muslim, and Palestinian speakers denounce Israel. They called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza as a short-term goal -- and an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands as a necessary step to reach a peaceful settlement. One of the speakers at the rally was Adam Shapiro, an American Jew married to a Palestinian-American, who together helped co-found the International Solidarity Movement. The ISM conducts non-violent direct action in Palestinian lands to demand an end to the occupation. Two of their members, Rachel Corrie and Tom Hurndall, were killed by Israeli soldiers while committing acts of civil disobedience. In this excerpt of his talk, recorded and produced by Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus, Shapiro contrasts the silence of the dead in Gaza and the silence of those who refuse to speak out against oppression. Visit the International Solidarity Movement's website at www.palsolidarity.org. Shapiro recently released a six-part DVD about the history of Palestinians since 1948 that he helped produce called "Chronicles of a Refugee." Israeli Reserve Soldier Explains
The vast majority of Israelis support their government's current war on Gaza, believing it's the only way to stop rocket attacks coming from the Hamas-led territory, and no doubt many also hope the Israeli military can eliminate Hamas as a threat once and for all.
His Refusal to Serve in Gaza ![]() ![]() Interview with Yitzchak Ben Mocha, an Israeli Army reservist, conducted by Melinda Tuhus ![]() But there is a smaller group of Israelis who oppose their country's action, and some are found within the Israeli military, called the Israel Defense Forces, which Palestinians label the "Israeli Occupation Forces." Yitzchak Ben Mocha is one of a number of reservists who have refused to serve in Gaza. Now a 25-year-old student, he joined the IDF at 18, like most Israelis do. He served three years in an elite paratrooper unit, much of it in the West Bank. While in the West Bank he observed soldiers using civilians as human shields, beating Palestinians, and destroying private property, including homes and olive groves. He came to the conclusion that the conflict with the Palestinians would not end until Israel ends their occupation of Palestinian land. Ben Mocha is still a reservist in the Israeli military, but when he was called up to serve in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, he refused. Although the government is putting some refusers on trial, Ben Mocha has not yet been prosecuted -- but told that he may be called up again, in which he says he'll again refuse. Between the Lines Melinda Tuhus reached Ben Mocha by phone in Israel, and asked him to explain why he is refusing to fight in Gaza. CIA Veteran Believes Leon Panetta Has Independence
President-elect Barack Obama's selection of former California Congressman and Clinton White House chief of staff, Leon Panetta, to become the nation's next director of the CIA, came as a surprise to many in Washington. Panetta, a former director of the Office of Management and Budget, who currently directs with his wife the Leon & Sylvia Panetta Institute for Public Policy in California, has no experience working within U.S. intelligence agencies. Outgoing Senate Intelligence Committee chairman West Virginia Democrat John D. Rockefeller IV, and incoming intelligence chairwoman California Democrat Diane Feinstein were both initially critical of the Panetta nomination, favoring an intelligence professional for the post.
and Integrity to Clean Up CIA ![]() ![]() Interview with retired CIA analyst Ray McGovern, conducted by Scott Harris ![]() Although Feinstein has since supported the Panetta pick, both she and Rockefeller have themselves been criticized as being submissive and/or complicit with the Bush administration's warrantless wiretap program and White House authorized torture of U.S.-held detainees. But some veterans of the CIA view Panetta as a good choice for his overall integrity and past record of opposition to U.S. sponsored torture and extraordinary rendition of terrorist suspects. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with 27-year veteran CIA analyst Ray McGovern, who until his retirement in 1990, led one of two CIA teams conducting the most secret daily intelligence briefings at the White House. McGovern discusses the merits of the Panetta CIA nomination and the importance of holding Bush administration officials, including the president himself accountable, for violations of the Geneva Conventions and U.S. law, in authorizing the abuse of prisoners.
