Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

This Week on Between The Lines

Posted Nov. 10, 2010 for week ending Nov. 19, 2010

lede

A new and dangerous phase of the class war has begun.

Will More Progressive Voices Be Heard in 2012?

If Tea Party voters knew what Between The Lines' listeners knew, would they have voted for candidates bankrolled by many of the very financial institutions that are responsible for the global economic meltdown? 2010 has been the year of the Tea Party -- backed by multi-billionaires David and Charles Koch, Fox News and anonymous corporate donors -- thanks to the Supreme Court ruling earlier this year on Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which not only allowed corporations, unions and nonprofits the same rights as individual citizens to influence elections, but to donate unlimited funds to candidates without disclosure.

We need your help more than ever to continue expanding our efforts to disseminate the work of independent journalists and progressive activists -- and to broadcast perspectives on socioeconomic, environment, energy and peace issues largely under-reported on the airwaves.

After Election Defeat, Democrats Must Choose: Move to the Right or Stand Up for Progressive Values

RealAudio RealAudio  podcast MP3

Interview with Robert Borosage, cofounder of the Campaign for America's Future, conducted by Scott Harris

teapartyracism In the aftermath of the 2010 congressional election -- which saw Republicans take control of the House of Representatives in a sweeping victory, gain at least six Senate seats and win a majority of governor's races across the country -- commentators are attempting to translate the message sent by an angry electorate. In a post-election press conference, President Obama appeared contrite and admitted he was responsible for a failure to better communicate his accomplishments to voters.. Story continues

Environmental Coalition Beats Back Oil Company Referendum to Overturn California's Global Warming Regulations

Interview with Larry Fahn, former president of the Sierra Club, conducted by Melinda Tuhus

prop23 One of the few bright spots for progressives in this year's election was the resounding defeat of Proposition 23 in California, which would have suspended the state's groundbreaking climate change law - AB-32 -- until unemployment dropped to 5.5 percent for four consecutive quarters -- an unlikely if not impossible scenario for the foreseeable future. A diverse coalition emerged to fight the proposition, which was largely funded by two Texas-based oil companies. Story continues

Secret Corporate Money That Bombarded TV Airwaves with Election Attack Ads, Undermines Democracy

Real Audio  Real Audio  podcast  MP3

Interview with Robert Greenwald, award-winning documentary film producer and director, conducted by Scott Harris

campaigntvads While anger at high unemployment and a sluggish economy was a driving force motivating many voters to cast ballots to throw incumbents out of office during November's midterm congressional election, the spreading of false and malicious information was another important contributing element. An estimated $4 billion was spent in the election campaign, with much of it dedicated to television advertising. Many of these ads targeting Democrats were purchased by groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS, that were funded this year by anonymous donors, thanks to the Supreme Court's Citizens United vs. FEC ruling that opened the floodgates to record amounts of covert corporate campaign cash. This week’s summary of under-reported news

RealAudio RealAudio  podcast MP3

Compiled by Bob Nixon

  • The Republicans who swept into power in Congress and state capitols promised to deliver austerity budgets and a renewed focus on slashing deficits at the cost of public employees and social programs for the poor. But progressive economists warn that cutting the federal deficit will not confront the basic crisis in the American economy: shortage of good-paying jobs and a broken credit system."On the Economics of Deficits," American Prospect, November 2010, p. A13-A14
  • Fontana, Calif., east of Los Angeles, is a central distribution hub for Wal-Mart and other "Big Box" retailers where dozens of warehouses are filled with low-paid immigrant workers who have few basic rights to fight for a decent wage and benefits like healthcare because they work for temporary employment agencies. "Holding Wal-Mart Accountable," American Prospect, October 2010
