Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

Egypt's New V.P.: Torturer in Chief?

As people in Egypt and around the world speculate about the fate of the Mubarak regime, one thing should be very clear: Omar Suleiman is not the man to bring democracy to the country. His hands are too dirty, and any "stability" he might be imagined to bring to the country and the region comes at way too high a price.

-- Lisa Hajjar, associate professor of sociology, and researcher/author on torture and other violations of human rights

Egypt's New Vice President is Washington's Proxy Torturer

RealAudio RealAudio  podcast MP3

Interview with Lisa Hajjar, professor of sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, conducted by Scott Harris

egypt After almost three weeks of intense street protests in Egypt demanding the removal of President Hosni Mubarak from power, more than 300 people were reported to have died in clashes between demonstrators, police and government supporters. Despite concessions such as Mubarak's pledge not to run in the presidential election scheduled for September and constitutional reform, the number of protesters in Tahrir Square in central Cairo swelled on Feb. 8. On that day, the crowd gave a hero's welcome to Wael Ghonim after he was freed from 12 days of secret detention by Egyptian authorities. Ghonim, a marketing executive for Google Middle East and North Africa, anonymously set up a Facebook page that many credit with inspiring the massive protests. Story continues

Popular Uprising May Demand Change in Egypt's Relationship with Israel

RealAudio RealAudio  podcast MP3

Interview with Ghada Talhami, professor of politics emerita at Lake Forest College, conducted by Melinda Tuhus

egyptisrael The question of how the popular uprising in Egypt will affect the liberation struggle of the Palestinian people is one of great concern in the U.S. as well as in the Middle East. The Camp David peace accords were signed in 1978 by Menachem Begin of Israel and Anwar Sadat of Egypt, who was assassinated three years later. For the past 30 years, under Hosni Mubarak, Egypt has collaborated with Israel to seal off the 1.5 million Palestinians living in Gaza and has been Israel's most powerful Arab ally. Story continues

Financial Crisis Commission Points Fingers, but Where's the Accountability?

Real Audio  Real Audio  podcast  MP3

Interview with Mary Bottari, director of the Real Economy Project, conducted by Scott Harris

wallst The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, made up of six Democrats, four Republicans and chaired by former California State Treasurer Phil Angelides, was formed in 2009 by Congress and tasked with examining the domestic and global causes of the U.S. financial and economic crisis. On Jan. 27, the bipartisan Commission released its 633-page final report where a majority on the panel concluded that the financial meltdown could have been avoided and was the result of poor decision-making both in government and at top Wall Street and financial firms that fostered a culture of excessive risk taking.
