Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

Meltdown of Global Public Confidence in Nuclear Energy at Hand?

...it's fair to say this is an unprecedented nuclear emergency ... now we know that there is a partial meltdown, because the authorities have admitted it.

The disasters that have befallen Japan continue to multiply. Thousands are already confirmed dead, with the toll expected to exceed 10,000 from both the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and the tsunami it triggered, which struck the island nation on March 11. Add to these already cataclysmic conditions the failures of the cooling systems, hydrogen explosions, fires and ultimately the possible breach of containment structures at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in the northern part of the country, where three reactors were operating at the time.  Story continues

In Retreat, Libyan Anti-Gadhafi Rebels Urgently Call for International Support

RealAudio  RealAudio MP3  MP3

Interview with Ali Abdullatif Ahmida, author of "The Making of Modern Libya: State Formation, Colonization and Resistance", conducted by Scott Harris

Producer's note: This interview was conducted on March 14, prior to a U.N. Security Council decision to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya, and subsequent French, British and Amerian cruise missile and fighter-jet attacks on Moammar Gadhafi's forces on March 19.

The protests and uprisings that have shaken autocratic governments and monarchies across the Middle East and North Africa took a deadly turn in Libya, when Col. Moammar Gadhafi, in power for 41 years, directed his military to suppress peaceful demonstrations against his regime. The violence used to silence the anti-Gadhafi protesters resulted in a full-scale armed rebellion with many of Gadhafi army officers and soldiers defecting to the rebel side.  Story continues

Republican War on Unions an Opportunity to Revive US Labor Movement

RealAudio  RealAudio MP3  MP3

Interview with Bill Fletcher, co-author of "Solidarity Divided: The Crisis in Organized Labor and a New Path toward Social Justice.", conducted by Scott Harris

wisconsin

After weeks of massive and sustained pro-labor demonstrations against Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker's legislation to strip public employee unions of most of their collective bargaining rights, Walker prevailed and signed the bill into law on March 11. Passage of the bill came despite the absence of 14 Democratic senators from the state, in a move to deny the Republican majority a quorum. The GOP revised Walker's "budget repair" bill, carving out the section designed to weaken unions, thus overcoming the need for the Democrats to be present for a quorum.  Story continues
