Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

The BTL Crew Thanks You!

To all who attended BTL's 20th Anniversary Celebration with Ralph Nader and our "Democracy in Action" awardees from the Universal Health Care Foundation and AFSCME Council 4, we thank you for a very enjoyable and successful event!

Ralph Nader gave a very eye-opening speech on corporate power and corruption, as well as a surprise fundraising pitch for Between The Lines, which he began with a match of $100 if nine others would join him with $100 each. Then a good friend in the audience made a match challenge of $1,000 and another young woman made a match of "everything here"! If you didn't get a chance to donate, but still would like to, please donate either online or by check.

If you're interested in getting the audio CD or DVD video of the talk with Ralph Nader, send us your contact information.

Interview with Howard Friel, independent scholar and co-author of "Israel-Palestine on Record: How the New York Times Misreports Conflict in the Middle East", conducted by Scott Harris

peacetalks

Not long after President Obama delivered his May 19 speech addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa, he was attacked for undermining Israel by conservative sectors of the U.S. pro-Israeli lobby, politicians of both parties and some influential newspapers. Specifically, Obama was criticized for urging Israelis and Palestinians to begin negotiations toward recognition of an independent Palestinian state using Israel’s pre-war 1967 borders as a foundation for new talks, the same formula accepted by both Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.  Story continues

Triple Meltdowns at Fukushima Reactors Another Reason to Phase out Nuclear Power

Interview with Arjun Makhijani, president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, conducted by Scott Harris

meltdown

The Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, admitted last week that the three failed reactors they operate at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant complex have melted down. According to the utility company, nuclear reactor Units 1, 2 and 3, which lost their cooling systems in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake-triggered tsunami, have had their fuel rods melt, transformed into a highly radioactive molten mass and settled to the bottom of the reactor’s containment vessels. There are indications that some of the super-heated uranium fuel has melted through Unit 1's reactor steel container and reached a second protective layer made of concrete.  Story continues

West Virginia Protest March Will Link Campaign to Stop Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining and Labor Solidarity

RealAudio  RealAudio MP3  MP3

Interview with Larry Gibson, "Keeper of the Mountains" in West Virginia , conducted by Melinda Tuhus

mountain

From June 4 through 11, hundreds of people will march from the town of Marmet, W. Va. to Blair Mountain, 50 miles away in Logan County to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Blair Mountain. The battle was the largest insurgency in U.S. history after the Civil War, and pitted some 10,000 West Virginia coal miners against the coal bosses, their private army -- and eventually, the U.S. military -- as they fought for the right to join a union.  Story continues
