Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)
Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.
Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.
His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

"Syria is a long way from democracy. ... I'm not convinced the U.S. wants real democracy there. Ever since the 1979 revolution in Iran, the U.S. has feared what Iran can be. I believe (arming the Syrian rebellion) would clear the way for an attack on Iran, probably first with Israel and then the U.S. stepping in, given its defense pact.
– Ron Jacobs, author of "Syria Through The Looking Glass," on U.S. supplying the rebellion in Syria with arms, since Syria is one of Iran's few allies.

Interview with Ron Jacobs, author, "Syria Through the Looking Glass", conducted by Scott Harris
The armed rebellion against the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad, designated a civil war by the International Red Cross on July 15, is now being fought in the nation’s major cities including the capital, Damascus. Although the death toll has now risen to an estimated 19,000, diplomatic efforts by the United Nations to broker a cease-fire have thus far failed. Eyewitnesses have reported that the regime’s fighter jets have bombed areas of Syria’s largest city, Aleppo. Journalists on the ground in Aleppo and Damascus say forces of the opposition Free Syrian Army have also been attacked by government helicopter gunships.

Interview with Ladd Everitt, communications director, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, conducted by Melinda Tuhus
As moviegoers in Aurora, Colo., settled in to watch the latest Batman movie after midnight on July 20, James Eagan Holmes entered the theater, threw a smoke grenade and began shooting people at random, with weapons that included a semi-automatic assault rifle. Twelve died, 58 were injured. This mass murder is just the latest in a long string of attacks that differ in detail, but are similar in that America's lax gun laws provide easy access to all kinds of guns and ammunition, often to people who are ex-felons or those who suffer from mental illness. Recent incidents include Jared Loughner's January 2011 attack on former House Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., that left six dead.

Interview with Joanne Landy, co-director of the Campaign for Peace and Democracy, conducted by Scott Harris
The eurozone crisis continues, with Spain recently paying the second highest interest rate to support its debt since the founding of the euro currency – with the prospect that Madrid will need an emergency cash infusion soon to avoid crashing. The trouble in Spain comes as the Greek economy, the focus of multiple previous bailout and austerity plans, shrinking 6.9 percent last year, with a further contraction of 6.7 percent predicted for 2012.
