Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

Will the Slaughter of the Innocents in Newtown Lead to Gun Law Reform in U.S.?

By Scott Harris and Anna Manzo

We produce Between The Lines every week about 25 minutes south of Newtown, Conn., and like people around the world, we were shocked and sickened to hear about the unspeakable slaughter of 20 innocent children and 6 adults that took place Friday at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Read our blog post which includes a variety of articles, featuring both commentary and analysis of the Newtown massacre - including some very powerful personal testimonies from people whose lives were touched by senseless violence and their observations of the lessons we could learn from the children lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"The fact that the president's power to execute foreign nationals or U.S. citizens in total secrecy and without due process has been so systemically entrenched means that there really is no conceivable end to it. If Barack Obama has the authority to exercise this power, that means the next president, whether Republican or Democrat, would have that authority as well."

– Glenn Greenwald, Guardian (UK) columnist and author of "With Liberty and Justice for Some," on the danger of acquiescing to President Obama's self-declared power to order targeted assassinations.

Civil Liberties Erosion in President Obama’s Second Term Will Continue Unless Citizens Mobilize

Interview with Glenn Greenwald, author and Guardian (UK) newspaper columnist, conducted by Scott Harris

civilliberties

As a U.S. senator running for president in 2007 and 2008, Barack Obama pledged to end indefinite detention and the rendition of terrorism suspects to other countries, where they often were tortured. The former constitutional law professor also promised to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. As he campaigned four years ago, Obama vowed to govern the country differently than George W. Bush, respecting the separation of powers and not acting unilaterally to extend the power of the executive branch.  Story continues

Climate Change Divestment Campaign Pressures Universities to Divest Their Fossil Fuel Stocks

divest

Bill McKibben, the author of a dozen books about the environment and founder of the grassroots climate change campaign group 350.org, just completed a 21-city tour focused on applying pressure on colleges and universities to divest their portfolios of fossil fuel stocks. McKibben’s “Do the Math Tour” was based on his article in Rolling Stone magazine last summer that explained that no more than 20 percent of the known reserves of coal, oil and natural gas can be extracted and burned if we are to limit the warming of the earth's atmosphere to no more than two degrees Celsius. That's the amount above which scientists predict life on Earth will be dramatically disrupted.  Story continues

Labor Rights Under Attack Again: Michigan, the Birthplace of U.S. Labor Movement, Adopts "Right to Work" Law

RealAudio  RealAudio MP3  MP3

Interview with Frank Hammer, retired United Auto Workers union activist and contributor to Labor Notes magazine, conducted by Scott Harris

righttowork

In the latest assault on labor rights in the U.S., the state of Michigan’s legislature has passed so-called, “right to work” legislation, which allows workers represented by a union in the public and private sector to opt out of paying union dues. Michigan’s Republican governor, Rick Snyder, has vowed to sign the bill into law, maintaining the measure is pro-worker and will attract jobs to the state. The corporate-backed drive in Michigan is seen by the labor movement as part of a coordinated attack against unions that was launched last year against public employee’s collective bargaining rights in the states of Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana.  Story continues
