Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

Critics Separate Rhetoric from Reality in Obama's "Hope and Change" Foreign Policy

Real Audio  RealAudio MP3  MP3

Posted Sept. 12, 2012

Interview with John Feffer, co-director of Foreign Policy in Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies, conducted by Scott Harris

foreignpolicy

Sen. Barack Obama campaigned for the presidency in 2008, as the “hope and change” candidate on domestic as well as foreign policy issues. After years of growing disenchantment and opposition to President George W. Bush’s bellicose and militaristic policies abroad – including the invasion of Iraq based on false allegations – many Americans were ready for our government to take a new approach in dealing with the rest of the world.

But once elected to office, President Obama has continued to pursue many of the same military and national security policies that made his predecessor one of the most unpopular presidents in recent decades. There’s been widespread disappointment among progressive activists and younger voters to President Obama’s unfulfilled promises, including his failure to close the U.S. Guantanamo detention center in Cuba; continued dragnet, warrantless surveillance of U.S. citizens; targeted assassinations of suspected terrorists; an increase in drone attacks resulting in civilian death and injury in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and other nations, and aggressive prosecution of U.S. government whistle-blowers.

Between The Lines’ Scott Harris spoke with John Feffer, co-director of Foreign Policy in Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies, and author of "Crusade 2.0: The West's Resurgent War on Islam." He separates the rhetoric from the reality of Barack Obama’s foreign policy over the last three-and-a-half years while assessing GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s embrace of President Bush’s team of neo-conservative architects of the post-9/11 war on terrorism.
