Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

"How are these drone strikes being authorized, using what legal framework? How do you get on these kill and target lists? Those are the type of questions that are very much still outstanding. President Obama has yet to offer any details along these lines. We also believe that Congress needs to open impartial and transparent investigations around this as well."

– Interview with Rachel O'Leary, deputy director of membership with Amnesty International USA

union

More than 5,000 young people converged in Pittsburgh for the biennial PowerShift conference Oct. 18 through 21, where the focus is on the next generation's response to climate disruption. Pittsburgh is also the headquarters of the United Steelworkers Union. With more than 850,000 members, it's the largest industrial union in North America and includes many workers not affiliated with the steel industry. Leo Gerard has served as the Steelworkers’ union president since 2001, and under his leadership, the union has been a leading advocate of the principle that good jobs and environmental protection can go hand in hand. First, with the Apollo Alliance and subsequently through the Blue/Green Alliance, the Steelworkers Union has allied with the Sierra Club and other environmental groups to pursue common goals, without needing to agree on everything.  Story continues
