Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

"What I know beyond any shadow of a doubt is that adding military force to this already militarized problem will not bring peace and stability to Iraq. Peace is possible through peaceful means, not through military force. And I think that's a lesson that we should have learned by now."

– Matt Southworth, Iraq War veteran, on the renewed sectarian violence conflict in Iraq and the calls by some politicians for another round of American military intervention

U.S. Iraq War Veteran Warns Against New American Military Intervention in Current Iraq Crisis

MP3 Interview with Matt Southworth, Iraq War veteran, conducted by Scott Harris

iraq

As President Obama announced the deployment of 300 U.S. military advisers to assist Iraqi security forces, Sunni insurgents of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, continued to advance their drive to capture key cities and other strategic sites across Iraq. As he spoke publicly about sending the first U.S. soldiers back to Iraq since the withdrawal of combat forces there in December 2011, Obama’s earlier statement, “We will not be sending troops back into combat in Iraq,” appeared to be open to interpretation. The president has said that he is prepared to take “targeted and precise military action,” including a campaign of airstrikes that administration officials say could be extended into neighboring Syria.  Story continues

National Food Industry Launches Legal Attack on Vermont’s New GMO Labeling Law

MP3 Interview with Falko Schilling, consumer protection advocate with the Vermont Public Interest Research Group, conducted by Melinda Tuhus

gmo

In May, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin signed the nation's first stand-alone law requiring foods made with GMOs – genetically modified organisms – sold in retail outlets to be labeled beginning in July 2016. The law applies to all foods that are genetically engineered, which are almost exclusively processed foods at this point. Vermont's Right-to-Know GMOs Coalition campaigned for the law, arguing that labeling would provide consumers transparency about the foods they purchase. Two other New England states – Connecticut and Maine – have passed GMO labeling laws, but both depend on nearby states taking similar action for them to go into effect. Almost two dozen other states have considered GMO labeling laws this year, according to Food & Water Watch, which tracks and supports such bills nationwide.  Story continues

Supreme Court Rulings on Campaign Finance Opens Door to Big Money Influence in Local Elections

MP3 Interview with Adam Crowther, researcher with Public Citizen's Congress Watch, conducted by Scott Harris

koch

After the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission case in 2010, the floodgates of unlimited and unaccountable money from corporations and unions in U.S. politics were opened wide, very wide. But while many progressive activist groups, which opposed the high court decision, traced the exponential increase of money influencing the outcome of federal elections, there was little attention being paid to the effect the Citizens United ruling had on local politics.  Story continues
