Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

This Week on Between The Lines

"This Ohio case is just one of a number of ongoing court battles that really could shape what the voting landscape looks like. There's also ongoing lawsuits in Texas, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Kansas and Arizona. So even though we're only a few weeks out from this mid-term election, there's a lot of moving parts and we're not sure what kind of landscape voters are going to face in a lot of these states."

– Interview with Jonathan Brater, counsel with the Democracy Program of the Brennan Center for Justice, on how the GOP is working to suppress the minority vote nationwide.

Supreme Court Allows Ohio to Slash Early Voting Hours as GOP Legislatures Seek to Suppress Minority Vote Nationwide

MP3 Interview with Jonathan Brater, counsel with the Democracy Program of the Brennan Center for Justice, conducted by Scott Harris

voting

In a 5 to 4 ruling on Sept. 29, the U.S. Supreme Court effectively blocked the start of early voting in the state of Ohio, reversing an earlier federal appeals court decision that had prevented the state from reducing days allotted for early voting from 35 to 28 days. The lower court had also mandated Ohio restore some evening and Sunday voting that the state legislature had removed. Although the Supreme Court’s ruling is temporary until a full decision can be rendered, the reduction in voting hours will be in force for this year’s mid-term election on Nov. 4.  Story continues

LNG Terminal and Fracking Opponents Target Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for Major Protest

MP3 Interview with Ted Glick, national campaign coordinator with the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, conducted by Melinda Tuhus

On Sept. 29, the FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, approved the construction of a liquified natural gas, or LNG, export terminal at Cove Point, Maryland, in the town of Lusby on Chesapeake Bay. The facility was originally built to import natural gas, but since the boom of horizontal hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which extracts gas from tight shale rock formations over the last decade, the U.S. is awash in the fossil fuel and the industry is looking to sell it abroad.  Story continues

In a Now Familiar Pattern, U.S. Corporate Media Cheerlead New U.S. War in Iraq and Syria

MP3 Interview with Peter Hart, activism director with the media watch group FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting), conducted by Scott Harris

newwar

After President Obama announced his decision to expand the U.S. war against ISIS from Iraq to Syria on Sept. 22, American and Gulf state warplanes launched dozens of airstrikes targeting the militant Sunni group inside Syria’s borders. But according to Kurdish forces defending the northern Syrian city of Kobani located in a strategic position on the Turkish frontier, the U.S.-led bombing campaign was having little effect on the forward advance of ISIS fighters.  Story continues
