Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

"In 1979 ... the United States was completely in support of the Saudi export of Wahhabism or Salafism, or this sort of very fundamentalist, intolerant version of Islam."

– Sheila Carapico, professor of political science and international studies at the University of Richmond, Virginia, on the U.S.-Saudi commercial relationship of military arms for oil, during the geopolitical upheaval of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the Iranian revolution

Questions on 9/11 and Dismal Human Rights Record Cast Shadow on U.S.-Saudi Relationship

MP3 Interview with Sheila Carapico, professor of political science and international studies at the University of Richmond, Virginia, conducted by Scott Harris

President Obama concluded a visit to Saudi Arabia last week to meet with King Salman and other Gulf Cooperation Council leaders, amid much speculation about a falling out between Washington and Riyadh. Friction between the oil-rich kingdom and the Obama administration has risen over a number of issues, including the U.S.-brokered nuclear agreement with Iran and more recently proposed congressional legislation that would expose the Saudi government to legal jeopardy from lawsuits related to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.  Story continues

carbonfee

Former NASA climate scientist James Hansen is one of the world's leading authorities on climate change. He testified before Congress back in 1988 that global warming was already occurring due to the burning of fossil fuels, becoming one of the first scientists to go on the record with that assertion. Hansen now works at Columbia University's Earth Institute, where he continues to do research and publish ground-breaking papers on climate change. But he's also an advocate for the need to take action.  Story continues

Six Years After BP Oil Spill Disaster, Public Opinion Turns Against Dangerous Deep Water Oil Drilling

MP3 Interview with Antonia Juhasz, energy analyst, author and investigative reporter, conducted by Scott Harris

bp

Six years after the largest oil spill in U.S. history in the Gulf of Mexico, the nation is still trying to assess the long-term economic and environmental destruction. The man-made disaster began on April 20, 2010 after an explosion aboard British Petroleum's Deepwater Horizon oil rig that killed 11 workers and spilled 4.9 million barrels of crude oil into Gulf waters. The spill was even larger than previously calculated. Scientists from the federal government's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and several private research companies found oil along 1,313 miles out of 5,930 miles of surveyed shoreline in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, and Texas, making the disaster the largest marine oil spill in history.  Story continues
