Interview with Mark Crispin Miller, As the presidential election campaign goes into high gear with just several weeks remaining before the Nov. 2 vote, the U.S. corporate media continues to focus its coverage on marginal issues. CBS's "60 Minutes 2" program cancelled its broadcast of an investigative piece on the Bush administration's use of forged documents to back its pre-war claim that Saddam Hussein was building a nuclear weapons program. Instead, the network aired what is now known to be a flawed story on President Bush's Vietnam war era National Guard service using suspect memos. While U.S. soldiers and civilians continue to be killed and injured in an increasingly violent conflict in Iraq, much of the media is covering election horse-race issues, tracking the candidate's advertising campaigns and interpreting poll numbers. Meanwhile, an intelligence report given to the White House two months before President Bush launched the U.S. war against Iraq predicted that an American invasion would increase support for radical Islamic movements, result in a deeply divided Iraq prone to conflict and warned of a possible insurgency. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Mark Crispin Miller, professor of media studies at New York University and author of the book, "Cruel and Unusual, Bush/Cheney's New World Order." Miller discusses the threat to democracy he sees in the Bush administration's authoritarian policies at home and abroad, and support for religious groups working to establish a theocracy in America. After the Bush administration launched its war on terrorism and announced color-coded terror alerts, Benjamin and others founded a new group called Code Pink Alert -- Women for Peace, to give voice to women and men who oppose the administration's pre-emptive war strategy and attacks on civil liberties. Members of Code Pink were among the most creative and visible activists at protests outside both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions this summer. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus recently spoke with Medea Benjamin, who discussed the work Code Pink does to shake up the establishment and keep activists energized. Defying President Bush, House Passes Legislation Overturning His New Trade, Travel Restrictions on Cuba
Interview with Alvaro Fernandez,
Rep. Jim Davis (D-Fla.) introduced an amendment to the Transportation-Treasury Appropriation bill calling for an end to funding for enforcement of the harsh new travel restrictions on Cuban-Americans. The bill passed 225-174. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) passionately called for a complete end to the U.S. embargo against Cuba, which was ultimately defeated by a vote of 225-188. Legislation now moves to a House-Senate conference committee where these successes have often reached a dead-end. After the new travel restrictions were passed on June 30 of this year, 14 Cuban-Americans got together and formed the Cuban American Commission for Family Rights based in Miami. Between The Lines' Denise Manzari spoke with Alvaro Fernandez, president of the group who says that more work is needed to finally overturn the 45-year-old U.S. embargo against Cuba.
