Interview with Medea Benjamin,
Since before the Bush administration invaded Iraq in March 2003, the U.S. peace movement has staged some of the nation's largest anti-war demonstrations. Large and small protests have continued across America throughout the last three years of the war. Last summer, Cindy Sheehan, mother of slain U.S. soldier Casey Sheehan, broke though a virtual media blackout on the peace movement when she camped out in front of President Bush's Crawford, Texas ranch demanding to know, for what noble cause her son died in Iraq. On July 4th this year, a number of peace activists, including Cindy Sheehan, began a hunger strike in front of the White House demanding the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. After 28 days of fasting, leading members of the Iraqi Parliament invited the fasters to join them in Jordan to discuss their peace and reconciliation plan. In early August, eight hunger strikers traveled to Amman, Jordan to meet with these Iraqi MPs and break their fast. In Jordan, the group which included Cindy Sheehan, former California state Sen. Tom Hayden and Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink Women for Peace, met with official representatives of the Shiite governing coalition, the minority Sunni bloc, the anti-occupation Muslim Scholars Association, parliamentarians and torture victims from Abu Ghraib prison. The peace activists and the Iraqis agreed at the meeting to promote a specific timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Medea Benjamin, who describes the results of the meeting in Jordan. Interview with Chris Kromm,
On the one-year anniversary of the massive devastation wrought by hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, millions of the storm's survivors are still trying to pick up the pieces of shattered lives. While Congress has allocated $110 billion in disaster relief, Louisiana's U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu maintains that only 12 percent of those funds have actually reached the people who need it most. President Bush, observing the one-year anniversary of Katrina in New Orleans said, "It's the beginning of what is going to be a long recovery, but I'm amazed by the opportunity. I'm amazed by the hope that I feel down here." But many who were in the storm's path are reminded daily of the Bush administration's indifference and incompetence in preparing for the storm and dealing with its aftermath. One year after Katrina, less than half the population of New Orleans has returned, only half the city has electricity and half its hospitals remain closed. Tens of thousands of families still live in trailers and mobile homes with no plan in place to move them to permanent housing. Rotting debris and toxic waste from the floodwaters remain in many streets. The Institute for Southern Studies has just released a comprehensive report titled, "One Year After Katrina: The State of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast," which analyzes over 250 indicators and reports on 13 major issue areas related to post-hurricane reconstruction. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Chris Kromm, executive director of the Institute who summarizes his group's report and discusses the challenges ahead. Decision excludes women under 18
Interview with Ted Miller,
On Aug. 24, the Food and Drug Administration approved the over-the-counter sale of the morning-after pill, known as Plan B, to women over 18. This decision was the culmination of a five-year battle to increase access to the drug, which can prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. The sooner it's taken, the more effective it is. The government's decision means that women under 18 will not be able to purchase Plan B without a prescription, despite the recommendation of two FDA advisory panels that it is safe for all ages. The fight began in February 2001 when more than 60 medical and consumer groups filed a "citizen's petition" with the FDA to make emergency contraception available over the counter, asserting that the morning-after pill was safe enough to be sold without a doctor's supervision. Religious right and anti-abortion activists have opposed Plan B, calling it an abortefacient, but scientific opinion generally holds that it prevents conception and is thus a method of birth control, not abortion. Between the Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Ted Miller, communications director for NARAL Pro Choice America, about his group's three-year effort to win FDA approval for over-the-counter access to Plan B. He discusses what the compromise decision means for women's health, and how anti-choice groups are likely to react. For more information on the fight for access to Plan B, call NARAL at (202) 973-3000 or visit the group's website at www.prochoiceamerica.org
