Interview with David Becker,
As congressional investigations continue into the Justice Department firing of 9 U.S. attorneys, there is growing evidence that a Republican Party plan to influence the outcome of the 2006 federal elections was a primary motivation for the terminations. Almost half the U.S. attorneys targeted for firing had been the subject of complaints by Republicans party activists concerned about their lack of aggressiveness in prosecuting alleged cases of voter fraud. According to press reports and official documents, President Bush's political advisor Karl Rove put pressure on the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute dubious voter-fraud allegations linked to Republican Party electoral strategy. Observers say the GOP has a pattern of employing voter fraud charges to intimidate primarily minority voters in key battleground states. The May 14 resignation of Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty added to the U.S. attorney scandal, where Democratic and some Republican lawmakers continue to call for the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez. McNulty, the fourth senior Justice Department official to resign as a result of the scandal, had provided false information to Congress on the details of the U.S. attorney firings. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with David Becker, director of People for the American Way's Democracy Campaign. He served as a senior trial attorney with the Justice Department for seven years in both the Clinton and Bush administrations. Becker examines the links between the firings of the U.S. attorneys and the 2006 congressional election. Interview with Jeremy Scahill,
In his new best-selling book, "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army," investigative reporter Jeremy Scahill asserts that the private military contractor and security firm Blackwater USA, is the elite Praetorian Guard for the Bush administration's "global war on terror," with its own military base, a fleet of 20 aircraft, and 20,000 soldiers at the ready. Blackwater USA first came to the American public's attention in March 2004, when four Blackwater contractors were killed in an ambush in Falluja, Iraq. The men were burned and strung up on a bridge over the Euphrates River. This later led to a brutal U.S. counterattack on Fallujah, which killed hundreds of civilians, fueling the Iraqi insurgency. As Scahill writes in his book, thousands of soldiers of fortune working with Blackwater and other mercenary armies in Iraq, comprise a parallel military, immune from prosecution under Iraqi law and unaccountable under the U.S. Uniform Code of Military Justice. Blackwater's founder, Erik Prince, is a multi-millionaire, right-wing Christian fundamentalist ex-Navy Seal. Prince and his family have a long history of bankrolling many right-wing causes and are big supporters of President Bush. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Jeremy Scahill about Erik Prince's religious philosophy and why he feels that outsourcing the U.S. military could, in the not too distant future, threaten America's democracy. Learn more about Blackwater and other private military contractors at Scahill's website: www.blackwaterbook.com
Interview with Kathryn Bolles, Last week, for Mother's Day, Save the Children released its annual report, "State of the World's Mothers: Saving the Lives of Children Under Five." Niger and Sierra Leone are at the bottom of the list, with the worst maternal and child death rates. But when rating the degree of change between 1990 and 2005 -- both positive and negative -- Iraq topped the list of countries where the situation has worsened. In 1990, Iraq ranked just behind China with 50 child deaths per 1,000 births. Fifteen years later, Iraq's toll is 125 deaths per thousand births, while China's has dropped to just 27 deaths per thousand. On average, according to the report, 1 in 13 mothers will die in her lifetime from pregnancy-related causes. Nearly 1 in 5 children dies before her fifth birthday, and more than 1 in 3 children suffers from malnutrition. Most of these 28,000 deaths per day worldwide are preventable with simple and inexpensive interventions. Despite progress in some poor nations, the overall trend is negative. The child survival revolution of the 1980s and early 1990s has stalled. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Kathryn Bolles, a child health advocate with Save the Children who contributed to the group's child mortality report. She discusses the situation in Iraq and explains what life-saving methods work and the additional resources needed to save more babies and mothers. To get a copy of the report, contact Save The Children at 1-800 728-3843 or visit the group's website at www.savethechildren.org
