Interview with Daniel Ellsberg,
As the world observed the fourth anniversary of America's invasion of Iraq, President Bush has asked the U.S. Congress for an additional 8,000 troops to fight wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is on top of the 21,500 he ordered deployed to Baghdad two months ago. Four thousand seven hundred of these forces will be sent to Iraq to serve in a combat support role and as military police. Pentagon officials have said there would likely be new requests for additional troops in Iraq by May. Meanwhile, Democrats in the House were trying to pass legislation that would allocate $100 billion to fund the Iraq and Afghan wars, but with a stipulation that troops would be withdrawn from Iraq by August 2008 or sooner, if certain benchmarks of progress were not met. The measure provides additional funds for the war in Afghanistan and calls for the president to ensure that troops are properly trained and equipped before being deployed. In an effort to garner more votes, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi removed a provision in the original legislation that would have required congressional approval before the president could initiate any military action against Iran. Vice President Cheney attacked the Democrat's tepid legislative initiative by accusing them of "undermining the troops" and "telling the enemy simply to watch the clock and wait us out." Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Daniel Ellsberg, a former career government analyst who in 1971 leaked the now-famous Vietnam war "Pentagon Papers" to the press. The documents chronicled the lies and deceit employed by government officials to justify U.S. military intervention in Southeast Asian wars. Ellsberg reflects on the 4th anniversary of the war, dangers of a new war with Iran and the effectiveness of the peace movement.
