Violent Split Among Palestinians
Interview with Nadia Hijab,
After months of escalating battles between rival Palestinian parties, Hamas and Fatah, Hamas seized control of the Gaza strip in mid-June. In response to the Gaza takeover, President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah formed an emergency government in the West Bank, dismissing Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas from his cabinet. The Palestinian territories are now politically divided, with the West Bank under the control of President Abbas and Gaza ruled by Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas. Hamas, elected in January 2006 has been isolated by Israel, the U.S. and European Union for what they said was Hamas' refusal to recognize Israel's right to exist, renounce violence and honor previous treaties. A brokered deal forming a Fatah-Hamas unity government failed to end the Palestinian's isolation. Now, the U.S., Israel and moderate Arab governments have rushed to support Abbas and further contain Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert promised to release millions of dollars in withheld Palestinian tax money to Abbas and free 250 members of the Fatah movement from Israeli prisons as a "gesture of good will." Meanwhile, outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair has been named special Middle East envoy for the U.S., European Union, Russia and the United Nations, with an assignment to revive stalled peace talks. Between The Lines Scott Harris spoke with Nadia Hijab, senior fellow at the Institute for Palestine Studies, who discusses the violent split among Palestinians and the prospects for progress in peace negotiations. Call the Institute for Palestine Studies at (202) 342-3990 or visit the group's website at palestine-studies.org.
