With Democrats in control of the House and Senate, and growing public pressure on the "opposition party" to get tough with President Bush on his escalation of the Iraq war and prevent a new conflict with Iran, questions about holding the White House accountable for their abuse of power seem a low priority in Washington. But, unlike House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, grassroots progressive political activists around the U.S. respond with enthusiasm anytime, anywhere the word impeachment is uttered. Reflecting growing outrage among a majority of Americans outside the beltway over the government's Iraq policy, there is widespread and passionate support for investigating the lies and manipulation that President Bush and his administration used to mislead the U.S. into a disastrous and bloody war in Iraq. Elizabeth de la Vega is a former federal prosecutor with more than 20 years of experience. She was a member of the Organized Crime Strike Force and chief of the San Jose branch of the U.S. Attorney's office for the northern district of California. Now de la Vega has written a popular new book, where she lays out the legal case against President Bush for what she describes as "tricking the nation into war or conspiracy to defraud the United States." In "United States v. George W. Bush et al," the author makes the case using documents and other verifiable facts to convince a hypothetical grand jury, the readers, to indict defendants George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Elizabeth de la Vega about her book and why she feels it is vital that this administration be held accountable for their conduct around the Iraq war.
