If all goes according to plan, the largest leveraged buyout in U.S. corporate history will be completed in a few weeks. A Texas utility that spews that state's highest level of global warming emissions is in the process of being purchased for $45 billion by a team of private equity firms, and they set rigorous environmental requirements as part of the deal. If the deal proposed by Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts and Texas Pacific Group goes through, the TXU Corporation will abandon plans to build 8 of 11 coal plants in Texas and six outside the state. The company will also invest $400 million to encourage customers to use energy more efficiently and will support federal legislation for mandatory emissions curbs, among other green commitments. Two of the nation's largest and most mainstream environmental organizations -- Environmental Defense and the Natural Resources Defense Council -- were invited to the table to endorse the plan, which they did after promoting several of the environmental initiatives that were eventually adopted. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Jim Marston, Texas regional director of Environmental Defense, who is also in charge of the group's statewide global warming campaign. He explains how environmental organizations were invited to the table, what they were able to accomplish and what precedent this deal might set for the energy industry going forward.
