Interview with political blogger Digby,
On the second anniversary of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, political blogger, "Digby," raises serious questions about the role politics may have played in the Bush administration's inept response to the storm and its aftermath. Digby notes that President Bush's former political advisor Karl Rove was the one to recommend that Bush not land his plane in New Orleans as "Air Force One" took the now famous over-flight of the flooded city. As bodies floated in the streets of New Orleans and the Bush administration was widely criticized for mismanaging the post-storm crisis, Karl Rove was put in charge of the Gulf states' hurricane reconstruction effort. Rove, who retired from his post at the White House on Aug. 31, not surprisingly made politics a primary consideration in the rescue and recovery operation. Unlike most other southern states, Louisiana in recent years voted for Bill Clinton and elected Democrats as governor and senator, relying on the black majority of New Orleans to win statewide contests. Now, with only about 66 percent of New Orleans' majority black and democratic-voting residents returning to the city, the GOP is looking to once again make Louisiana a reliably Republican bastion. Between the Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Digby about her piece titled, "Katrina: Slow As Molasses." She discusses the likelihood that the Bush White House, led by Karl Rove, had taken advantage of the post-Katrina New Orleans' disaster to bolster the fortunes of Louisiana's Republican party.
