Top Bush Administration Officials Micromanaged Detainee Torture Interview with Jeanne Mirer, co-chairwoman of the National Lawyers Guild's International Committee, conducted by Scott Harris  Although Attorney General Ashcroft was in agreement with authorizing the abuse of prisoners during dozens of secret White House meetings after Sept. 11, 2001, ABC News quoted him as saying, "History will not judge this kindly." Human rights groups, including the ACLU, the Center for Constitutional Rights and the National Lawyers Guild have called on Congress to conduct an investigation into the possible commission of war crimes by Bush administration officials who approved or participated in establishing the U.S. torture program. Among those officials are John Yoo, a former deputy attorney general, now a professor of law at the University of California and James Bybee, a former assistant attorney general, now a federal judge. Both these men provided legal advice president Bush that his authorization of torture would not be a violation of international or domestic laws prohibiting the abuse of prisoners. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Jeanne Mirer, co-chairwoman of the National Lawyers Guild, who explains why her group is calling for the prosecution and disbarment of White House officials who authorized torture, a war crime under international and U.S. law.
