Interview with Dr. Stephanie Woolhandler, co-founder of Physicians for a National Health Program, conducted by Melinda Tuhus 
Physicians for a National Health Program, or PNHP, has 17,000 members who have been fighting for decades to establish a single-payer system, sometimes referred to by supporters as "Medicare for All." The group says that President Obama's bill fails to provide insurance coverage to about 23 million people, which will result in an estimated 23,000 unnecessary deaths annually. PNHP also criticizes the legislation for pressuring millions of middle-income people to buy commercial health insurance policies that will only cover an average 70 percent of their medical expenses, making them vulnerable to financial hardship and/or bankruptcy. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Physicians for a National Health Program, co-founder Dr. Steffie Woolhandler, who is a practicing physician in the Boston area and on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School. She says most members of her organization, while acknowledging some positive aspects of the bill -- such as preventing insurance companies from dropping people with pre-existing conditions -- think those benefits are outweighed by the negatives. _______________________________________________ See interview transcript. Interview with Phyllis Bennis, director of the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies, conducted by Scott Harris 
Although Israel considers East Jerusalem, annexed in 1967, as part of its territory, building on occupied land is illegal under international law. Almost half a million Jewish settlers now live in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. Before coming to Washington for talks with President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and to address the influential American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, Prime Minister Netanyahu refused to reverse his government's authorization for building new housing in East Jerusalem. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Phyllis Bennis, director of the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies, who examines the recent friction between the U.S. and Israel over settler housing expansion and the prospects for restarting Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. ______________________________________________ See rush interview transcript. Interview with Dana Frank, professor of history at the University of California, Santa Cruz conducted by Scott Harris  While in Guatemala in early March, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced Washington will restore more than $30 million in aid to Honduras that was suspended after the coup. But while the Obama administration is attempting to sweep the Honduran coup under the rug, repression of opposition groups continues. Three journalists have recently been assassinated by unknown assailants, in addition to a series of deadly attacks targeting activists and media outlets associated with groups that resisted the coup. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Dana Frank, professor of history at University of California, Santa Cruz. Frank, who recently returned from a fact-finding trip to Honduras, describes a broad coalition of progressive organizations mobilized and motivated in the face of growing repression. ______________________________________________ See rush interview transcript.
