Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

Earthquake Ravaged Haiti Faces Cholera Epidemic, Post-Election Violence and Political Uncertainty

haiti In advance of Haiti's Nov. 28 presidential and legislative election, there were calls by many politicians and activists for a delay in the vote, owing to the nation's ongoing earthquake disaster relief and an active cholera pandemic. But President Rene Preval prevailed and the election proceeded with the two top vote-getters unofficially announced as former first lady Mirlande Manigat and Preval's Unity Party candidate Jude Celestin, will compete in the second round Jan. 16 runoff election.

However, in the days after the balloting, there were widespread allegations of fraud, and thousands of angry, disenfranchised voters marched in protest. Musician and presidential candidate Michel "Sweet Mickey" Martelly was excluded from the runoff election. But after his supporters engaged in violent demonstrations that left at least four people dead, Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council announced it would recount the ballots.

Unhappiness with the election extends to Haiti's largest political movement, the Lavalas Family Party, the base of twice ousted president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, whose candidates were barred from appearing on the November ballot. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Kim Ives, an editor at the Haiti Liberte' newspaper. Ives talks about the outcome of the disputed election and prospects that responsible leadership could emerge to lead Haiti out of its multifaceted humanitarian, economic and political crises.
