Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

Human Rights Group Calls for an Immediate International Arms Embargo Against Syria's Government

As escalating violence in Syria moves towards a 17th month, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates that the death toll now exceeds 17,000. As pressure mounts for the international community to take action to quell the violence in Syria, the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown signs of distancing itself from its longtime ally in Damascus. Moscow recently announced that it would restrict new arms shipments to Syria, even as it continues to honor past military contracts with the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Russian diplomats also recently met with a delegation of opponents of the Syrian regime, signaling that they may be preparing for a future Syria without Assad.

Meanwhile, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan continues to try to salvage his three-month long effort to negotiate a peaceful settlement in Syria, recently meeting with Assad, opposition groups and representatives of the Iranian government.

In recent days, the Assad regime has seen significant defections from the ranks of the military. Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass, a commander in the powerful Republican Guard and the son of a former defense minister, reportedly left Syria – a move that some observers believe will encourage more defections by top officials. Between The Lines’ Scott Harris spoke with Sanjeev Bery, Amnesty International’s advocacy director for the Middle East and North Africa who talks about his group’s call for an immediate arms embargo against the Syrian government and other actions to reduce and eventually end the violence.
