Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

The Christian Right's Prominent Role in GOP Exposed by Their Candidates' Extremist Views on "Rape"

Since the 2010 midterm congressional election where the Republican Party won control of the U.S. House of Representatives as well as governors seats and state legislatures nationwide, politicians allied with the religious right have aggressively pushed an agenda to outlaw or limit access to abortion, reduce insurance support for contraceptives and pass laws prohibiting gay marriage.

Although GOP candidates campaigning for office in 2010 pledged to focus their attention on fighting unemployment and advancing policies that would help create new jobs, they appear to have instead devoted much of their time over the past two years to advancing an agenda advocated by extreme elements of the nation's Christian Right movement. GOP Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin underscored this point when he made headlines by asserting that "legitimate rape" would not result in pregnancy, justifying his position opposing legal abortion in such cases. More recently Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock argued that pregnancies resulting from rape are "something that God intended to happen."

Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Frederick Clarkson, a senior fellow with Political Research Associates and author of the book, "Eternal Hostility: The Struggle Between Theocracy and Democracy." Here, he examines the important role the Christian Right played in this year's presidential and congressional election campaign.
