Gen. Petraeus's Contradiction:
"Troop Surge is Working;
No End of Iraq War in Sight"

Interview with Matthew Rothschild,
editor of the Progressive Magazine,
conducted by Scott Harris

iraqwar

On the eve of the sixth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks that killed some 3,000 Americans, Congress heard testimony from Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker, reporting on the status of the Iraq War. The two officials presented a rosy picture of the war, proclaiming that the overall civilian death toll had decreased, security incidents had declined and the deployment of an additional 30,000 U.S. troops since January had met military objectives.

Press reports, however, found that many experts inside and outside government have challenged the statistics presented by the general on the levels of violence in Iraq as selective. In the House hearing on Sept. 10, Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., accused Gen. Petraeus of "cherry-picking statistics" and "massaging information." As the hearings in the House droned on for more than six hours, anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan and nine other protesters were arrested after they disrupted the proceedings to demonstrate their opposition to the war.

While the majority of the American people oppose the war and want to see soldiers brought home, General Petraeus advocated a withdrawal of 30,000 troops by the summer of 2008, which would only bring U.S. forces down to pre-surge levels. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Matthew Rothschild, editor of the Progressive Magazine, who assesses the renewed congressional debate on Iraq War policy and President Bush's continued reference to the 9/11 attacks, to justify his decision to invade and occupy Iraq.

Constitutional Scholars Say Bush War
on Terrorism Makes U.S.
Less Safe, Less Free

Interview with Jules Lobel,
professor of law
and co-author of the book, "Less Safe, Less Free,"
conducted by Scott Harris

security

After the devastating attacks on New York City's World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the downing of an airliner over Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001, many Americans wanted desperately to attack and kill those responsible for launching the deadly terrorist strike. But despite President Bush's decision to adopt harsh, and often illegal measures to confront terrorism, six years later, Osama bin-laden is still at large and disseminating his hate-filled messages via video tape.

By many accounts, the Bush administration's detention of thousands of suspects without charge or trial, the abuse and torture of unknown numbers of detainees in U.S. custody, initiating warrantless surveillance operations against foreigners and Americans and the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq, has not succeeded in making America more secure.

In a new book titled, "Less Safe, Less Free, Why America is Losing the War on Terror," by two constitutional scholars, David Cole and Jules Lobel, make the argument that President Bush's violations of the constitution and international law -- adopted in the name of prevention -- have in fact made the United States more vulnerable to future terrorist attacks. They effectively challenge the administration's claim that it is winning the war on terror and offer an alternative strategy in which the rule of law is an asset, not an obstacle, in the struggle to keep Americans both safe and free. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with the book's co-author Jules Lobel, professor of law at the University of Pittsburgh and vice president of the Center for Constitutional Rights. He discusses what he views as the deeply flawed anti-terrorist policies pursued by the Bush administration and recommendations for a new more effective path that will preserve liberty.

Mountain Top Removal Coal Mining Destroys
Environment and Communities

Interview with Vernon Haltom,
co-director of Coal River Mountain Watch,
conducted by Melinda Tuhus

mountaintop

While recent media headlines focused weeks of attention on the six coal miners tragically trapped in a collapsed mine in Utah, another coal-related story has been unfolding for years in Appalachia that has generated very little media coverage: The physical destruction of mountains to mine the coal underneath. The practice of mountain-top removal blasts the tops off mountains and dumps the soil, rock and waste in valleys below. So far 1,000 miles of West Virginia streams have been buried. The process contaminates the water, fouls the air, and threatens the continued existence of many rural communities.

A coalition of groups opposing the practice points to a federal study showing that between 1992 and 2002, 380,000 acres of mountaintops were destroyed. Yet less than five percent of these flattened areas have seen any economic development, which was one of the benefits coal companies maintained would result from destruction of the mountains.

After the Utah disaster, the Bush administration proposed easing federal restrictions on mountain-top removal, which already operates under very little regulation. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Vernon Haltom, co-director of Coal River Mountain Watch. He explains why his group labels mountain-top removal "eco-terrorism" and what opponents are doing to fight the practice.
