Reproductive Rights Issue Missing
in Presidential Campaign

RealAudio

Interview with Gloria Feldt,
former president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America,
conducted by Melinda Tuhus

abortion

There have been many signs in the past year about the shifting political terrain on reproductive rights in the U.S. Last April, in its Gonzales v. Carhart decision, the Supreme Court upheld the first-ever federal abortion ban, restricting but not overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion that marked its 35th anniversary on Jan. 22.. Just this month, data was released showing a marked decline in abortions, likely due both to women's easier access to more effective birth control, and a drop in the number of abortion providers and new roadblocks for women who seek abortions. Media culture has also weighed in on the issue, with two popular movies, "Knocked Up" and "Juno," and the real-life drama of 16-year-old actress Jamie Lynn Spears' pregnancy.

Yet, the presidential candidates have been virtually silent on the issue of reproductive rights, even with a strong pro-choice woman in the race.

Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Gloria Feldt, long time reproductive rights activists and former president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America from 1996 to 2005. Feldt, currently a writer and lecturer, discusses why she believes abortion is not yet an issue in the presidential race, but should be. And she explains how pro-choice advocates can find new approaches to support the threatened Roe v. Wade decision.

Gloria Feldt recently endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. Read Feldt's articles online at www.gloriafeldt.com or visit the Planned Parenthood Federation of America's website at www.plannedparenthood.org.
