Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)
Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.
Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.
His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

The tragic Feb. 26 shooting death of unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by a volunteer neighborhood watch captain in Sanford, Fla., has focused the nation’s attention on the issue of racial profiling and its sometimes fatal consequences. The fact that the shooter, 28-year-old George Zimmerman, has not been arrested, despite having a record of being previously arrested for assaulting a police officer in 2005 and a history of domestic violence, adds to the feeling of many in Florida and around the country, that race played a role in how the police handled the case. Federal Court Overturns EPA Revocation of Mountain Top Removal Coal Mine Permit
Interview with Chuck Nelson, anti-MTR activist and chairman of the board of the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, conducted by Melinda Tuhus
In January 2011, the Environmental Protection Agency revoked the Clean Water Act permit for the Spruce No. 1 coal mine, the largest mountaintop removal site in West Virginia. Mountaintop removal coal mining is the process of blowing up mountain tops to access the coal seams underneath, and dumping the rocks and earth into valleys below. Citing major environmental damage if the project proceeded, including the burial of miles of mountain streams, this was the first time the EPA had rescinded an already-granted permit from the Army Corps of Engineers. The nation’s first Occupy Wall Street protest encampment in New York City’s Zuccotti Park last September had a dramatic effect both on the morale of progressive activists and on the focus of America’s national debate. The actions of a small number of mostly young people who decided that a prolonged protest camp was the only way to communicate their message calling attention to the nation’s growing income inequality and a failed and corrupt political system, struck a chord with millions of Americans reeling from the Great Recession and decades of declining economic fortunes. - Human Rights Watch reports 400 women and girls in Afghanistan are in jail for so-called moral crimes such as fleeing forced marriages and domestic violence. Women and girls are also regularly convicted of the crime known as "zina," or having sex outside of marriage, often only on the word of an aggrieved husband or family member.
