THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM
Interview with Joseph Gerson,
While Americans focused last week on the White House public relations offensive to prolong the Iraq war -- which featured congressional testimony from Gen. David Petraus and U.S. ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker followed by a nationally televised address by President Bush -- tensions are heating up with Iran. In a briefing at the National Press Club, Petraeus stated that arms exported from Iran, including 240mm rockets and explosively formed projectiles, "contributed to a sophistication of attacks that would by no means be possible without Iranian support." Pentagon officials maintain that some Iraqi Shia militia forces are being trained by the Iranian Republican Guard Corps Quds Force. U.S. officers have also alleged that an advanced Iranian-made missile had been fired at an American base inside Iraq. Meanwhile, the U.S. and some European nations are pushing for harsher sanctions against Iran for their failure to comply with a U.N. demand to halt their uranium enrichment program. Reacting to statements from the newly-elected government of French President Nicolas Sarkozy threatening war with Iran if it did not submit to the U.N., International Atomic Energy Agency Chief Mohamed Elbaradei urged Iran's critics to learn from the deadly miscalculations of the Iraq invasion. Elbaradei is currently negotiating with Iran to reveal past nuclear activities that could be linked to a weapons program. Tehran maintains their nuclear research is for peaceful purposes only. But many observers looking at the U.S. deployment of two aircraft carrier groups off Iran's coast, and press reports that the Pentagon has prepared contingency plans for a massive airstrike against Iran's nuclear research facilities are concerned that momentum toward conflict has reached a critical moment. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Joseph Gerson, director of programs at the American Friends Service Committee in New England about the rising tensions surrounding the the U.S. confrontation with Iran. Joseph Gerson is author of the book, "Empire and the Bomb: How the United States Uses Nuclear Weapons to Dominate the World." Visit the Friends Committee website at www.AFSC.org Related links:
Interview with Zoltan Grossman,
As members of Congress and various presidential candidates debate the war in Iraq and proposals for withdrawing American forces, most put forth the idea that the U.S. must leave military bases behind for the training of Iraqi troops and countering terrorism. A few, like Democratic presidential hopefuls Bill Richardson and Dennis Kucinich, pledge to bring all the troops home. Iraq is currently one of about 160 nations around the world that host a total of 700 U.S. military bases and a number of other smaller outposts. Some of these bases are a legacy of World War II and the Cold War, located in Europe and the Pacific. There are relatively few bases in Latin America and Africa. But across the globe, there is growing opposition to America's military presence, which has sparked movements pushing for the closure of these bases. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Zoltan Grossman, a geographer and faculty member at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash. who is an authority on U.S. military bases. He talks about where they have proliferated most recently, what model the U.S. is following, and how international resistance is growing. Zoltan Grossman is author of the article, "New U.S. Military Bases: Side Effects or Causes of War?" For more information, visit the website of the International Network for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases at www.no-bases.net
Interview with Jeremy Brecher,
The November 2006 congressional election which saw the Republicans lose control of both the House and Senate, was seen by many political observers as a referendum on President Bush's presidency, but more specifically an expression of widespread opposition to the Iraq War. But since taking over Congress, Democrats have not used their power of the purse to either end the conflict or significantly change course in Iraq. Many anti-war activists who worked hard in 2006 to defeat legislators supportive of President Bush and his war have become frustrated with Washington's lack of responsiveness to the public demand for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. A recent poll conducted by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found that 54 percent of Americans surveyed favor bringing the troops home as soon as possible. Despite more than four years of large and small protests around the U.S., the peace movement has not been able to affect change. Now a new strategy has been initiated modeled on the 1969 "Moratorium" launched against the Vietnam War, which saw the participation of millions of Americans in thousands of communities. Organizers say that the Iraq War Moratorium will be an escalating, monthly series of actions demanding an end to the war. The Moratorium is set to begin Sept. 28st and continue on the Third Friday of every month thereafter. The objective, supported by a growing list of peace groups, activists and celebrities, is to make a break with business as usual and engage the majority of Americans opposed to the war to take action. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with historian and author Jeremy Brecher, who is a long time peace and justice activist and a former member of Students for a Democratic Society. He recently co-wrote an article with Brendan Smith summarizing the objectives of the moratorium for The Nation Magazine titled, "A Moratorium Wired to Stop the War." For more information on the Iraq Moratorium, visit the website IraqMoratorium.org.
