Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)
Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.
Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.
His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

"Many of the (food stamp/)SNAP recipients are way below the poverty line. The benefits even before the cuts are very, very modest. The average SNAP benefit is $4.35 a day per person. This may mean $90 a month less for households on SNAP. The maximum monthly allotment for a family of three right now is $526 (a month). ... We don't know how soup kitchens and food pantries will be able to accommodate the demand."
– Ellen Vollinger on Senate's approval of the Farm Bill which includes $4.5 billion in food stamp cuts over 10 years. Food aid recipients have increased to nearly 46 million from 28 million just before the financial meltdown.

Interview with Ellen Vollinger, food stamp/legal director with Food Research and Action Center, conducted by Scott Harris
As Congress debates the 1,000-page Farm Bill, Republicans have targeted the federal food stamp program for deep cuts, now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. Over the past four years of the Great Recession, the numbers of Americans receiving food stamps has increased from 28 million to 46 million, with a doubling of the cost. With stubbornly high unemployment and millions of people facing the exhaustion of their unemployment compensation checks, many middle-class families will be turning to help from the food stamp program for the first time in their lives.

Interview with Rabbi Rachel Kahn-Troster, Rabbis for Human Rights, conducted by Melinda Tuhus
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., held a first-of-its-kind congressional hearing June 19 on the use of solitary confinement in U.S. prisons – a practice many human rights advocates assert is torture. The hearing took testimony from prison officials, relatives of prisoners and former inmates on ways to reduce the damaging effect of the practice. The hearing before the Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights followed the filing of a class-action federal lawsuit by the Center for Constitutional Rights May 31 on behalf of prisoners at Pelican Bay State Prison in California who have spent between 10 and 28 years in solitary confinement.

Interview with Coleen Rowley, former FBI agent and whistleblower, conducted by Scott Harris
Facing extradition from Great Britain to Sweden for questioning related to sexual assault allegations made against him by two women, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange sought political asylum by taking refuge in Ecuador’s London embassy on June 19. Denying the sexual abuse claims, Assange expressed fear that if he were to arrive in Sweden, that nation would in turn extradite him to the U.S to face charges of publishing classified government and military documents. Many WikiLeaks supporters believe that a grand jury has been impaneled in the U.S. and is secretly indicted Assange, awaiting an opportunity to extradite him.
