Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)
Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.
Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.
His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

Interview with Nina Eichacker, lecturer in economics at Bentley University and a member of the Dollars and Sense collective, conducted by Scott Harris
Great Britain upended the status quo across Europe when a slim majority of the nation’s voters cast ballots on June 23 to leave the European Union. Britain first joined the European Economic Community in 1973, which in 1993 was transformed into the European Union. Financial markets across the globe reacted to the Brexit vote with major losses and volatility, while the British pound fell to its lowest value in 31 years.

On June 23, the Colombian government, under President Juan Manuel Santos and the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, led by Timoleon Timochenko, reached an historic agreement on a bilateral ceasefire and the rebels’ disarmament, which now clears a path toward the possible end of more than 50 years of civil war. Negotiations which have been underway in Havana since 2012, with the Cuban government acting as mediator, may conclude with a formal peace agreement signed on July 20, Colombia’s independence day. A final peace deal will require the approval of Colombian voters in a national referendum, which has not as yet been scheduled.

Interview with Joe Foran, immigration activist with Unidad Latina en Accion, conducted by Melinda Tuhus
A Latino activist group in New Haven, Connecticut had scheduled a protest for June 23 to denounce the killing of nine teachers in the Mexican state of Oaxaca - and U.S. complicity through its funding of Plan Merida, which provides millions of dollars for the Mexican government to buy weapons to fight the drug war. But by the time of the protest, they'd added a press conference to denounce that morning's Supreme Court tie vote that blocked President Obama's program to allow five million undocumented immigrants with U.S.-born or legal resident children to stay in the U.S.

Compiled by Bob Nixon
- According to Foreign Policy magazine, Dagestan has now overtaken Chechnya as the most violent region in Russia, with the influence of radical Islam on the rise. Dagestan and Central Asia are now recruiting hot spots for ISIS, and Russia is the third most popular language spoken among followers of the Islamic State.("Cracking Down on Russia's Caliphate," Foreign Policy, May 31, 2016)
- The International Olympic Committee has formed a new team representing displaced Olympic athletes who have been forced to flee their countries. The team has 10 athletes from Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia and South Sudan who will be competing at this summer’s Olympic games in Rio. This is the first group of refugee athletes the IOC has recognized as a team, although individual athletes were allowed to compete in the early 1990s during the multi-sided war in the former Yugoslavia. For these athletes, who have lost their homes and citizenship, it’s an effort to restore an element of their humanity in sports.("Olympians Without Nations: First-Ever Team of Refugees Heads to Summer Games," Yes! Magazine, June 9, 2016;
"Refugee Runners: Olympics Fields Its First Team without a Country," Christian Scince Monitor, May 26, 2016)
- Global fertilizer corporations were accorded special influence during last year’s important climate change summit in Paris, which crafted guidelines on agricultural policy related to the threat of climate change.("The Politics of Fertilizer and the Exxons of Agriculture," In These Times, April 28, 2016)
