Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

"One protection against voting discrimination is a core right that belongs to all Americans. It's an American entitlement, not a racial entitlement. So calling protection for the right to vote something that should be eliminated is just contrary to the Constitution. Justice Scalia here is ignoring that it's Congress that has the power to prevent and deter racial discrimination in voting. "

– David H. Gans, director of the Human Rights, Civil Rights and Citizenship program at the Constitutional Accountability Center, on Justice Antonin Scalia's comment that the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is a "racial entitlement"

One of the major accomplishments of America’s civil rights movement is under attack. The 1965 Voting Rights Act, enacted to prevent local and state governments from disenfranchising minority voters, is being challenged before the U.S. Supreme Court by Shelby County, Ala., whose officials assert that the law is an anachronism, no longer needed in the “post racial, New South” and is an unconstitutional infringement on “state sovereignty.”  Story continues

In 2010, civil rights lawyer and legal scholar Michelle Alexander published “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.” In the book, she argued that the war on drugs – declared in the 1970s – replaced the war on poverty and created a legal way to discriminate against African Americans after the end of both slavery and legal racial discrimination in the South, known as Jim Crow.  Story continues

Before a military judge during a pre-trial hearing at Fort Meade, Md. on Feb. 28, Army Pfc. Bradley Manning pled guilty to 10 charges, facing up to 20 years in prison, while contesting 12 more serious charges for his release of hundreds of thousands of classified government documents to WikiLeaks. Imprisoned for more than 1,000 days since his arrest in May 2010, with part of that time spent in solitary confinement or under harsh conditions, the 25-year-old former intelligence analyst will face a court martial in June on charges that include “aiding the enemy,” which carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.  Story continues
